advantage: boutique?

In your experience, do boutiques have an advantage? A non-recruiting consultant specializing in the space confirmed that clients believe boutiques almost always provide better service. Then why do the big firms still do so well in competitive situations? Many believe it can be explained in the old industry saying, "No one gets fired for hiring the big brand". Your thoughts?
